Concrete Rehabilitation After Fire Damage

Defect Report

Due to high temperatures in conjunction with fire shallow delamination of concrete as well as critical loss of section may occur in the concrete.

Reinforcement steel could be heavily affected by the exposure to high temperature, which may eventually have an influence on the stability of the element or the whole structure.

Depending on the type of fire hazardous gases from burned wires, drains and various flooring materials (PVC) i.e. may be washed out from the fire fighting water and transferred into the concrete. Damage to the construction materials and the stability of the elements will be caused.

Remedial Works

Remove contaminated and defective concrete (shallow concrete) by using blasting technique or by other suitable means.

In case a low chemical contamination is evident water may be added to minimise the effects of dust and high pressure water jetting may be utilised to remove the contaminated concrete.

Chemical treatment of the surface depending on the contamination, i.e. application of lime hydrate.

Add reinforcement steel

Re-profiling the defective area and/or Strengthening of concrete structures using spray applied concrete.

Quality assurance
The removal of contaminated and affected concrete (shallow concrete) will be executed with approved materials and methods according to the European standards, Code of Practice for the Protection and Rehabilitation of Concrete Elements and it’s quality and testing methods.
